Elizabeth is a northern suburb of Adelaide, in the state of South Australia, Australia. Elizabeth is located approximately 24kilometres from the Adelaide CBD and is located in the City of Playford.
Elizabeth is bounded by Elizabeth North in the north, Main North Road in the east, Elizabeth South Road and Elizabeth Grove in the south, and the Gawler railway line in the west.
Elizabeth was established in 1955 as part of a planned satellite town by the South Australian Housing Trust on rural land between the older towns of Salisbury and Smithfield. Elizabeth is named after Queen Elizabeth II who visited in 1963.
Elizabeth acts as the central business district for the area. It contains the main shopping complex at Elizabeth City Centre located between the Gawler train line and Main north road with Major Retailers, Harris Scarfes, Target & Big W, Supermarkets Coles & Woolworths, and other specialty stores including Rebel Sports, Best & Less, JB Hi-Fi, etc.
Entertainment within the area is catered for with Reading Cinema, the Elizabeth Aquadome with 50m indoor heat pool, toddlers pool, indoor waterslides, Health club with gym facilities and kiosk, Playford Alive Oval (home of the Central District Football Club) & Grand Central with sports bar, bistro, gaming & function rooms. Elizabeth Bowland. Shedley Theatre with live theatre, dance, music performances, school events & concerts.
The area is surrounded by large open spaces with Dauntsey Reserve to the north, Ridley Reserve to the south which now includes the Adelaide United Training Facility and Fremont park to the west of the shopping centre. All of these areas are regularly used by families and sporting organizations throughout the year.
There is a large concentration of education facilities in the Elizabeth area with the Elizabeth Library, Playford International College, Kaurna Plains School, TAFE of SA (Elizabeth Campus) and St Patrick’s Technical College.
DSTO & RAAF Base Edinburgh are located to the west of Elizabeth these are home to the No 92 Wing's AP-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft and the new home of the 7th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment.
Elizabeth is serviced by Main North Road, connecting the suburb to Adelaide CBD, and by the Philip Highway to Salisbury. Elizabeth is serviced by public transport run by Adelaide Metro. The Adelaide/Gawler railway line passes beside the suburb with the Elizabeth interchange servicing the area.
